AdaIC NEWS Fall 1995
Dr. Charles B. Engle, Jr., is the new Chief of the Ada Joint Program Office. He will hold this position as part of his responsibilities as the new Technical Advisor for DISA's Center for Software. In this role, he will also serve as the Chief of the Software Reuse Initiative -- among many additional duties designed to integrate Ada and reuse into the Center for Software's other activities.
Dr. Engle comes to the Center for Software under the provisions of the Intergovernmental Personnel Act (IPA), whereby exceptionally qualified individuals from outside DoD serve a term in important decision-making roles. Dr. Engle is from the Florida Institute of Technology where he is an Associate Professor and Chair of Computer Science.
Dr. Engle is already familiar to many in all three worlds of Ada -- government, industry, and academia. Prior to his retirement from the Army in 1989, then-Major Engle was Deputy Program Manager of the Software Engineering Institute Joint Program Office. He had previously taught Computer Science at West Point.
Besides his academic career at Florida Institute of Technology, he has also been a consultant to many Florida, national, and international industries on real-time systems, Ada, and software engineering. Dr. Engle has spent the last two summers in Sweden as a consultant on cleanroom and Ada to Ericsson, Bosch, and other international corporations. Throughout his efforts, he has been active in such other activities as standards efforts and in the Association of Computing Machinery's Special Interest Group on Ada (ACM SIGAda). Also, he was a member of the former Ada Board, the Federal advisory board for most of that body's existence.
As Technical Advisor, Dr. Engle will be assisted in the day-to-day operation and management by Ms. Linda Safford; she will assume the positions of Project Manager for the Software Reuse Initiative and acting Project Manager for the Ada Joint Program Office.
