ABSTRACT

DECBIND2 - Digital's Xlib/Xt/Motif bindings for Ada

Digital is making these bindings free to use and modify as long as you don't change our copyright notice or sell them. We would like to hear from you if you encounter any software errors reports or comments.

Please contact morris@begin.enet.dec.com

These bindings are compatible with systems with both X11R4/Motif 1.1 and X11R5/Motif 1.2. If you're using Digital hardware and have X11R5/Motif 1.2 then you will also be able to compile the DXm bindings (DECMotif Extensions).

Note that this is an update to previously released bindings.

The Ada Xlib/Xt/Motif bindings require the existance of the C Xlib/Xt/Motif bindings. (Ie: the include files and the libraries are available). The actual bindings are pure Ada code, produced by tools written in Ada and C.

The C tools are compiled using your systems Xlib, Xt, and Xm include files, and they use the information found there to produce Ada representation clauses, constants, etc. that exactly match the C representations of the structures, etc. This is how this kit can reliably generate bindings for a range of architectures, regardless of word-size, alignment-rules, etc.

The approach that we use for doing this is applicable for producing any bindings to C interfaces, and is worth looking at independent of its use here.
